Shellings from Relative Shellings, with an Application to NP-Completeness

چکیده

Shellings of simplicial complexes have long been a useful tool in topological and algebraic combinatorics. complex expose large amount information helpful way, but are not easy to construct, often requiring deep about the structure complex. It is natural ask whether shellings may be efficiently found computationally. In recent paper, Goaoc, Pat\'ak, Pat\'akov\'a, Tancer Wagner gave negative answer this question (assuming P \neq NP), showing that problem deciding shellable NP-complete. we give simplified constructions various gadgets used NP-completeness proof these authors. Using combined with relative shellability other ideas, also exhibit simpler decision problem. Our method systematically uses build up desired properties.

Geometric shellings of 3-polytopes

A total order of the facets of a polytope is a geometric shelling if there exists a combinatorially equivalent polytope in which the corresponding order of facets becomes a line shelling. The subject of this paper is (geometric) shellings of 3-polytopes. Recently, a graph theoretical characterization of geometric shellings of 3-polytopes were given by Holt & Klee and Mihalisin & Klee. We rst gi...

Flags and shellings of Eulerian cubical posets∗†

A cubical analogue of Stanley’s theorem expressing the cd-index of an Eulerian simplicial poset in terms of its h-vector is presented. This result implies that the cd-index conjecture for Gorenstein∗ cubical posets follows from Ron Adin’s conjecture on the non-negativity of his cubical h-vector for Cohen-Macaulay cubical posets. For cubical spheres the standard definition of shelling is shown t...

'Lassoing' a phylogenetic tree I: Basic properties, shellings, and covers

A classical result, fundamental to evolutionary biology, states that an edge-weighted tree T with leaf set X, positive edge weights, and no vertices of degree 2 can be uniquely reconstructed from the leaf-to-leaf distances between any two elements of X. In biology, X corresponds to a set of taxa (e.g. extant species), the tree T describes their phylogenetic relationships, the edges correspond t...

Introduction to Np-completeness

We use time-bounded (deterministic and nondeterministic) Turing machines to study computational complexity of decision problems. In this model, a Turing machine has two different halting states, called the accepting state and the rejecting state, respectively. We say that a Turing machine M is bounded by time T if for any input x, M on x always halts in T (|x|) moves (steps). If M is determinis...
